Toru in Norwegian Wood has a part-time job working in a record store, which is where Murakami ended up immediately after leaving college. Music of all kinds plays a huge role in much of Murakami's writing, classical, rock, but especially jazz. And from the record store, Murakami quickly graduated into the jazz world full time.
I didn't feel like going to work for a company and becoming a salary man, so I took out a loan and opened a club. I was running my business, listened to jazz from morning to night, making cocktails and sandwiches. Every day, I had to chop up a whole bag full of onions. Thanks to this experience, I can still chop up onions without shedding tears. I fell in love with jazz in 1964, when Art Blakey came to Kobe, and I went to the concert. I was so shocked. So from then, from 1964, I have been a very enthusiastic jazz listener until now.
