These days the little green books and implausibly glamorous female bodyguards are gone. What's left is a country moving slowly and not always that steadily from dictatorship to democracy.
Today marks an important milestone on that journey with Libya's first nationwide election in nearly half a century. People who grew used to hearing one dominating voice have been given the chance for their own voices to be heard as they vote to replace the National Transitional Council with an Assembly whose task will be to usher in a new, more legitimate government. Not everyone is happy about the process. Election officials have confirmed that all the 1,500 polling stations, 100, mostly in the east, have been prevented from opening because of acts of sabotage. Will Davis filed this report from Tripoli.
Well before eight o'clock this morning when the polling stations opened across Libya, there was a steady, patient, but pretty excitable queue of voters at the Mohammed Benatomous School here in Tripoli, one of the biggest polling stations in the capital. Among those first in the queue was Ashmadin Arifi. We followed him as he went through the labourious process of finding his name on the list, going upstairs, waiting in another queue before receiving the ballot paper and putting his cross against the piece of paper. This is how we felt about the whole process.
"I feel free at last. It's such an unbelievable feeling. I cannot describe it. It's, I feel like a human being."9个月前卡扎菲上校被击毙,他那越来越怪诞的统治也就和他一样尘归尘土归土。
