Crowds cheered the conviction of the ex-President Hosni Mubarak for his decision to allow the killing of protesters in Tahrir Square last year. In his speech, the judge, Ahmed Rifaat, referred back to the 25th of January last year when the Egyptian revolution started and said that the day had heralded a new dawn.
"For 30 years these people suffered dark dark dark era like a dark night of a cold winter, without hope, without aspiration. Yet on that day, a new morning dawned."
And then came the verdicts, not guilty for Hosni Mubarak's sons, but life behind bars for him.
"And the court has decreed, in the presence of all the accused, to punish Muhammad Hosni El Sayed Mubarak with life imprisonment for the charges levelled against him, for committing crimes, premeditated crimes, and other premeditated crimes and in accordance with the crimes as mentioned."
