When we think about plastic surgery today, it conjures images of Hollywood stars who refuse to grow old gracefully and it sparks debates about the worst excesses of modern society. But this isn't, for the most part, what plastic surgery is all about. And it's certainly a long long way from where it all began.
The modern-day speciality of plastic surgery was forged in the fire of war to meet the needs of men whose faces have been destroyed by fire. And these injuries were themselves the unintended consequence of another pioneering technology of the time - the high-performance fighter plane.
Victory of the Battle of Britain was earned by squadrons of British fighter planes. And while the iconic Spitfire is immediately identified with that battle, it was its largely forgotten cousin, the Hawker Hurricane that did most of the fighting, downing more enemy aircraft than all the other ally vehicles in that battle combined. But the victory came at a terrible price and not least for the few - the pilots of those fighter planes, many of whom endured horrific burns in the course of combat. And for those at the controls of the Hurricane, those injuries were given a special name - the Hurricane Rash.整形外科手术的名声算不上多么好，不过在今天的《发现》节目中，我要来关注这一医疗领域的诞生，它的起源其实远比所多人想象的要高尚得多。我是凯文·冯，本期节目——飓风疹。

当今的整容专科本是在战火中炼成的，其初衷是为了服务那些被火烧得面目全非的人。而这类烧伤本身也是当时另一项尖端科技无意中带来的后果——性能卓越的战斗机。
二战中，不列颠战役的胜利要归功于英国战斗机飞行中队。光芒四射的喷火式战斗机很快就成了这场战役的代名词，但其实，大多数的战斗任务都是由它几乎被遗忘的表兄弟飓风式战斗机完成的。在那场战役中，被飓风击落的敌机比盟军所有其他飞行器击落的加起来都多。但这番胜利的代价也极其惨重，尤其是对一个小众群体——那些战斗机飞行员们而言，其中有许多人都在战斗中遭受了严重的烧伤。尤其是那些驾驶飓风战斗机的飞行员，他们的烧伤被冠以一个特殊的名字——飓风疹。
