The problem is Madrid doesn't have that sort of money handy. And the more concerns there are about the health of the country's banking sector, the more expensive it is for Spain to borrow from international investors. But Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy spent much of Monday assuring everyone that Madrid wouldn't take the humiliating step of asking for emergency funds from the EU and IMF, while insisting that there was no alternative but to put more government money into Bankia.
"The alternative would've been doing nothing, that is to go bust. So what we are doing, if you allow the expression, is grabbing the bull by the horns. We cannot allow our financial entity to be in an impossible situation, because it affects our country overall. "
So can Spain save one of its leading banks and avoid an international bailout? Professor Javier Diaz Gimerez in Madrid is of Spain's IESE Business School.
"When you want to save a bank, basically you need fresh money. The Spanish government is in dire straits these days and it's having a lot of trouble to borrow funds. It means to pay a very high interest rate. If you need to borrow another €50 billion, that is going to mean a very steep interest rate. Given the situation in the markets, I think it's unlikely that the Spanish government on its own would be able to somehow borrow this extra 50 billion. Therefore, that makes the alternative, which is borrowing from the European Stability Mechanism more likely and it makes it more feasible."
