Juliette Binoche plays an investigative journalist for the magazine Elle - that's singular, working on a feature about this apparently dismal development. In the process, however, she's forced to reassess her own situation as bourgeoise wife and mother, and indeed, her own sexuality. This isn't as radical an idea as it might first appear. Didn't Catherine Deneuve and other 60s' housewives discover some parallels between capitalist conformity and the oldest profession? What Elles has, however, is far more explicit sexuality and if it lacks conviction as a story, it doesn't want for commitment on the part of Binoche who gives the performance so frank that it almost hurts. That quality was apparent in Kieslowski's Three Colors: Blue nearly 20 years ago. It brought her an Oscar, BAFTA and Silver Bear for the English Patient in 1997.
