I've been talking to one of the world's foremost experts in robots Colin Angle who co-founded and runs iRobot. It makes robot vacuum cleaners to vacuum your carpets and military robots used to identify and defuse roadside bombs in Afghanistan and Iraq. But what of the future? Will they play a role in actual warfare?
"I think military robot used in combat is on the horizon."
"Would you make them?"
"We would. There's a very, very strict doctrine which says there should be a person in the loop, because there is no intelligent system in the world that is sophisticated enough to make those type of judge and cause. But if you think about what a robot can do, it can allow a 19-year-old soldier to shoot second and live. It can allow a soldier with a mission of going into a room, who before the robot only had two options: one, throw in a grenade and potentially kill innocent people in that room, or second, jump in himself and potentially get shot - both heinous, horrible decisions. Shouldn't there be a third? And yes, with a robot.
