In his letter to Dorothy, he tells her of the desperate length the survivors went to stay alive, at any cost.
Dear Dorothy: I was so pleased to receive your letter and to find you'd not forgotten me. I had intended writing to you before, but I felt ashamed of my writing. You see, I have no feeling yet from my knuckles to the tips of my fingers owing to having been frozen in the water. And having heard from you, I have got to write.
Well, I am glad to say that I'm getting along fairly well considering the experience I had on the Titanic.
I was asleep at the time it happened, and I just turned over and went to sleep again. About ten minutes later, the young chap who shared my cabin with me, he came to me and began to yell out that the ship had struck an iceberg. I soon dressed and got up on deck to find crowds up there putting on lifebelts. It was an awful sight to see the men's faces when the last boat went off.
And before you could say Jack Robinson, there seemed to be mountains of water rushing through the doors. Whilst all this was going on, she was going underwater and it seemed as if thousands of men were dragging me under with her. 事情发生时我正在睡觉，我翻了个身继续睡。大约十分钟之后，和我住在同一个船舱的小伙子走到我身边，喊道船撞上了冰山。我很快穿好衣服跑上甲板，发现人们都在忙着穿上救生衣。当看到最后一艘救生艇放下的时候，人们脸上的表情实在是太恐怖了。
说时迟那时快，排山倒海一般的水涌进了舱门。与此同时泰坦尼克号在向水下沉没，好像成千的人都在拽着我同她一起下沉。当船沉之后，眼中所见之景实在是令人惊恐。
