Labour has gained more than 700 seats and taken control of an additional 29 councils. So with declarations in from 161 councils, the Conservatives have lost 13 of them, and 377 councillors. The Prime Minister David Cameron struck a humble tone this morning.
"I'm sorry for the hardworking Conservative councillors who've lost their seats obviously against a difficult and national backdrop. These are difficult times and there aren't easy answers. What we have to do is take the difficult decisions to deal with the debt, the deficit and the broken economy that we inherited. And we'll go on making those decisions because we've got to do the right thing for our country."
The Labour leader Ed Miliband said these results were a rejection of the government's economic policy.
"People are hurting. People are suffering. People are suffering from the recession. People are suffering from a government that has raised taxes for them and cut taxes for millionaires. I think that's what we saw last night and I hope David Cameron takes some notice. And this is why we got more work to do in saying to those people, 'Look, Labour can change Britain for the better.
