The main perpetrators of course died when the planes they hijacked were crashed into the World Trade Centre, the Pentagon and in Pennsylvania, killing 3,000 people. And now finally, 11 years later, and nine years after his capture, the trial is beginning of the man accused of planning the attacks - Khalid Sheikh Mohammed. He's among five defendants who've been formally charged by a military tribunal at Guantanamo Bay. There've been concerns about the legitimacy of the trial and defence lawyers have complained of restricted access to their clients. But the chief prosecutor, Army Brigadier General Mark Martins, insisted they had nothing to worry about.
"Some have said that any attempt to seek accountability within the military commission system must inevitably be tainted by torture. To those who have these concerns, we say we acknowledge your skepticism, but we also say that for law prohibits the use of any statement obtained as the result of torture or cruel inhuman or degrading treatment, and we will implement the law.
