Until recently the expectation was that the current President Nicolas Sarkozy would be booted out. The euro crisis has after all ended the careers of a succession of European leaders. And there's no question that, like most other European countries, France has some serious economic problems to address. Yet in recent weeks, Mr Sarkozy has been clawing back ground from his main rival Francois Hollande of the Socialist Party. Indeed, it now looks like the result will be very close. So what are the key economic issues facing France and how do the candidates propose to tackle them? Shahin Vallee is a French citizen and a visiting fellow at the European think tank Bruegel. I asked him whether he thought either of the main presidential candidates have faced up to the huge challenges of resolving the eurozone crisis.
"I don't think that's the case yet, but at the same time the experience of the last two years of crisis is not meaningless. And I believe that it has laid the foundation of a stronger Europe.
