Senegalese state TV says Mr Wade made a phone call to his rival, the former Prime Minister Macky Sall, acknowledging his victory in the presidential runoff. Thousands of Mr Sall's supporters celebratedin the streets of the capital Dakar.
This woman said "I'm very happy. Macky is young. He's very polite, courteous, and really he deserves this. Everybody was wishing this for him."
Well, like neighbouring Mali, Senegal has for some time been seen as a rare beacon of democracy in West Africa. Like Mali too, that reputation appeared to be under threat. President Wade's determination to remain in office had seen him engineer a change to the country's constitution to allow him to seek a third term as president. That sparked widespread protests. In the election's first round, people were killed, feelings were running high - another disputed result, it was feared, might result in more violence. But instead, it galvanised the opposition into uniting around Mr Sall.
