That's a line from the "Dubliners", one of the best known works by one of Ireland's best known writers. Although James Joyce lived abroad for most of his life, much of his writing was firmly rooted in his home city of Dublin. And throughout this month as Ruth McDonald now reports, the push is on to reintroduce him to modern day Dubliners.
The upstairs room in the grand red-brick Rathmines Library just a few miles from Dublin city centre is packed to capacity. Joyce's fans and those who are new to the author have come for a special reading from "Dubliners", a collection of 15 short stories first published in 1914. Joyce, one of the masters of modernism in fiction has the reputation of an author who's sometimes hard to read. His final work "Finnegans Wake" is one of the most difficult novels in the English language. But "Dubliners" is a much easier book to enjoy, as Katrina Crowe of Ireland's National Archives explains.
"These stories are understandable. They are experimental for their time, but in terms of what we are used to reading now, they are perfectly easy to understand.
