The avalanche struck a remote battalion headquarters about 6,000 metres above sea level on the Siachen Glacier. The area is known as one of the world's highest battlefields with thousands of Pakistani and Indian troops stationed there. Our correspondent in Islamabad is Orla Guerin.
High in the Himalayas there's a frantic search for life in some of the most inhospitable terrain on earth. It's a race against time and sub-zero temperatures. Medical teams, rescue dogs, helicopters and hundreds of troops are searching for any survivors of the avalanche which the army says was on a massive scale. It engulfed the base just before six in the morning local time. The soldiers were buried alive, probably as many of them were still sleeping. The army expects the rescue mission to last for days.
