But are there others out there - a third billion, in fact, that's less talked about but in some cases much closer to home? That's the idea that's emerged from the International Labour Organisation's latest data, indicating that over the next decade, the impact of women entering the global economy as producers, entrepreneurs, employees and consumers will be at least as significant as that of China's and India's populations. That's a billion women who're currently out there out of the workplace or indeed denied a significant place within it because of domestic responsibilities or social taboos.
Well, Beth Brooke is a champion of this Third Billion Initiative, a global campaign combining governments, NGOs and people like her from the private sector. She's a former White House advisor and she's now chair of public policy of the global accountancy firm Ernst and Young.
"Women are already an emerging market, with the economic potential and power third in size behind India and China."
"They are potential because they are not actually, this third billion are not working right now. They are not being economically productive and they could be."
"That's correct. They are not for whatever reason, educational limitations, access to technology, if you're an entrepreneur perhaps access to capital, not as gainfully engaged in the economy as they could and will be and that represents the opportunity."
