The Greek government will get a €130 billion loan and have most of its privately held debt written off in return for tougher spending cuts and a huge selloff of state assets. The aim is to prevent Greece defaulting on its debts and being forced out of the euro. The deal must still be ratified by a number of European governments, and it could yet be undone by elections in Greece in April. But the Prime Minister Lucas Papademos said he was sure any Greek government would live up to its commitments.
"This government is committed to do so, and I'm convinced that the government, after the election, will also be committed to implement the programme fully and in a timely fashion, because this is in the interests of the Greek people. "
But what of the Greek people? Many have taken to the streets recently to voice their anger at the spending cuts, and they remain suspicious that this deal won't help to improve their lives. Constantine Nicholas is from the Athens Chamber of Commerce.
"The funds that are coming in are not staying in Greece, are not being invested in Greece, are not here to help the Greeks get out of this crisis.
