Well that may sound like science fiction, but according to Britain's most prestigious science body, the Royal Society, advances in understanding of how our brains work mean that that possibility may not be so very far off. Zoe Combrey has more.
How a soldier prepares to go to war could be about to change. Being good at push-ups and knowing how to fire a gun may still matter, but how about sending electrical currents through a soldier's skull to improve their ability to detect roadside bombs or snipers? This is just one example being given by the Royal Society to show the benefits neuroscience could bring the military. Another could involve using the brainwaves of an injured soldier to operate a prosthetic limb or wheelchair. Professor Rod Flower explains how that would work.
"You put on a little skullcap which contains electrodes, and these electrodes pick up electrical activity from top of your skull. And every time you make a decision like 'turn left', 'turn right', this is reflected in different signals that are picked up by the electrodes. The potential advantage is that your subconscious mind can process information much more rapidly than your conscious mind, and also much more completely."
