It's January the 13th, 1898, under a huge headline, reading "I accuse", the great novelist, Émile Zola, writes an open letter to the French president.
"Mr President, will you allow me to tell you that your star, so happy until now, is in danger of being dimmed by the most shameful and indelible of stains. It is my duty to speak up, I will not be an accessory to the fact. If I were, my nights would be haunted by that innocent man so far away, suffering the worst kind of torture, as he pays for a crime he did not commit."
The innocent man was a Jewish Army officer called Alfred Dreyfus, convicted of treason and jailed on a desert island. Zola names seven top military officers and accuses them of framing him.
"I have but one goal, that light be shed in the name of mankind which has suffered so much, and has the right to happiness. My ardent protest is merely a cry from my soul, let them dare to summon me before a court of law."
