According to state television broadcasts in Egypt, all premier-league matches have now been cancelled, and the newly-elected Egyptian parliament is to hold an emergency session on Thursday. Football's FIFA President Sepp Blatter has called it a "black day" for football. Jon Leyne is the BBC correspondent in Cairo. This is what he saw.
"A lot of us were watching on television as that game did end. It was being shown widely across the country because al-Ahly are the top side in Egypt at the moment and they were being beaten, decisively beaten by this team from Port Said. And as the final whistle went, the supporters from al-Masry, the Port Said team stream onto the pitch. They charge, and firstly the players from al-Ahly have to make a run for it, and then of course, their supporters. And there's also missiles and flares thrown at those al-Ahly supporters. So what ensued, of course, was a remarkably high casualty toll: 73 people, now said to be killed according to the authorities, and many hundreds injured."
