Communist North Korea invaded South Korea with the support of China and the Soviet Union in 1950. The United States got support from the United Nations, formerly the League of Nations, for military intervention, and a bloody war continued into 1953. Although an armistice eventually was signed, U.S. troops remain in South Korea to this day.
