But fizzy drinks can make you fat - we're told - and America has an obesity problem. In New York they've been trying to bring in a law restricting the sale of soda. It was due to come in on Tuesday and stipulated that no restaurant would be allowed to sell drinks larger than 16 ounces - that's more than three quarters of a pint. But it's not going to happen. A judge has thrown it out. Caroline Levy is a beverage analyst at Credit Agricole in New York and I put it to her that the drinks industry was not taking this attempted control lying down.
Oh my gosh. The drinks industry is fighting tooth and nail for their rights. And it is, in fairness, unusual that any one food or beverage type would be singled out 'cause there're lots of foods and beverages that have sugar in them. I guess what Bloomberg was targeting was some of these supersized drinks that go hand in hand with so-called value meals and so on.
Who on earth drinks more than 16 ounces in one go of a sugary drink?
Well, fair to say, people do. You know, we joke that you need a supermarket cart just to go to the movies because you got to put your giant popcorn and your giant soda in there.
