The Russian space agency Roscosmos said the meteor pieces travelled at speeds of up to 30 kilometres a second. The meteor caused a series of explosions setting off a chorus of car alarms.
This woman, Daria Fantova, told the BBC what happened to her.
"I was awoken in the morning by a really loud sound. It sounded like an explosion, and so I ran to the balcony to see what was happening. And I saw a light line in the sky. It was crossing the sky right above my house. And so I thought it was the plane crash, then I thought that was maybe a rocket launching.
