In fact, its origins are in the early 1970s when a Chinese table tennis champion Zhuang Zedong helped to pave the way for thawing relations with the United States by initiating an unlikely friendship with the American table tennis team at an international tournament in Japan. Well, following that, the Americans visited China, and then President Nixon seized the moment going there himself in 1972, and giving this speech in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.
"If our two peoples are enemies, the future of this world we share together is dark indeed. But if we can find common ground to work together, the chance for world peace is immeasurably increased."
