It's a very different attitude in these new films to age. And its expectations spoor back 75 years to 1937, and a classic of retirement drama Make Way for Tomorrow, directed by Leo McCarey. It's a heart-breaking yet complex melodrama about a couple who have to surrender their home to the bank and live with their children, a poignant study of renunciation and resignation.
Make Way for Tomorrow was admired by the Japanese director Yasujiro Ozu, whose 1953 Tokyo Story depicts the gap between generations. Even Michael Haneke's Amour the great critical success of last year, about the final months of a Parisian couple has something of that unsparing elegy. But these other new films, dramas, romances, thrillers, comedies, from King's Speech, and Best Exotic Marigold Hotel through The Expendables, and even perhaps Skyfall, celebrate the strength and maturity. They're not necessarily about the last years of life but they do deal with grown-up topics, history, difficult relationships, and they suggest that there's much still ahead, much still to fight for and enjoy, no resignation for these guys. So when did the cinema industry first notice the trend? Charles Gant is an analyst of cinema attendance.
Really for me, the tipping point is The King's Speech. So even now The King's Speech, obviously had a much more varied age of characters, than for example, a film like Quartet or even Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.
