Hundreds of thousands of Roman Catholics have pulled a statue of Jesus through the streets in Manila, the capital of the Philippines. It is an annual ritual to demonstrate faith and seek miraculous cures for illnesses.
The life-sized wooden statue of Jesus, known as the Black Nazarene, is believed to have been brought by Spanish missionaries from Mexico in 1606. The barefoot devotees jostled each other to touch the statue in the hope that its mystical powers will rub off on them.
Many believe the statue has the power to wash away sins or cure illnesses. 80% of the population in the Philippines is Catholic.
