But it was enough to prompt thousands of people to register to be married on Friday. 10,000 couples were expected to tie the knot in Beijing alone. Others turned up without an appointment. The Chinese news agency ran pictures of couples queuing in the rain in Hainan in the south and crowding into register offices in the east.
Numbers are important in China. Eight which sounds like the word for prosperity is considered particularly lucky. The Beijing Summer Olympics started on the 8th day of the 8th month, 2008. Telephone numbers and car registrations containing eights can command astronomical fees. Most inauspicious is the number four. Some high-rise buildings in China don't have a 4th or a 14th floor.
