Shortly afterwards inspectors from the UN's nuclear watchdog, the IAEA, were sent to Libya to try to make sure their plans really had been abandoned. Bethany Bell has been speaking to one of those inspectors.
It's December, 2003. After nine months of secret talks, Colonel Gaddafi, the leader of Libya, has just renounced weapons of mass destruction. The British Prime Minister Tony Blair makes this announcement in London.
"Colonel Gaddafi has confirmed that Libya has in the past sought to develop weapons of mass destruction capabilities, as well as longer-range missiles. Libya has now declared its intention to dismantle its weapons of mass destruction completely and to limit the range of Libyan missiles."
There'd been concern about Libya's pursuit of WMD for years. The Libyans had been secretly working on uranium enrichment to try and make fuel for an atomic weapon, and they also admitted to having Chinese designs for a nuclear bomb. They bought them from a black market network in nuclear weapons run by a scientist in Pakistan.自利比亚宣布放弃开发大规模杀伤性武器之日起，九年已经过去了。在那之后不久，来自联合国原子能监督机构IAEA的检察人员就被派往利比亚，确认他们是否真的放弃了武器开发计划。贝瑟妮·贝尔采访了那些观察员其中之一。
