Nearly ten years ago their lead singer Emmanuela Yogolelo fled the violence in her home country of the Democratic Republic of Congo and sought asylum in the UK. She didn't speak a word of English but she managed to forge a musical career. She also uses her talents to help other refugees through the organisation Musicians Without Borders. She recently took part in a concert they organised in which survivors of torture came together to make music. When I spoke to her from Salford in the northwest of England, Emmanuela told me how the war in the DRC affected her and her large extended family.
"It impacted on like my studies, my job, my future, everything, because you were no longer like free to plan for your future, to move around, to fulfil your dreams, your project. Sometimes you're not even able to go out of the house. Like twice my country was divided into two. I was living in the part occupied by rebels. We didn't have much like international connections. We didn't have like airports. It wasn't easy to travel, going out of the country. And everything was controlled by armies, by rebels. “它影响了我的一切，比如我的学习，我的工作，我的未来，因为你不再能自由地为未来做打算了，也不能随心所欲到处跑，去实现你的梦想，你的规划。有时候你甚至都不能走出家门。我的国家曾两次分裂成两部分。我住的地方被叛军占领。我们和国际上没有太多联系。我们没有机场，要出国很不容易。而且军队，也就是叛军控制了一切。那就是我那时候的生活。”
