Nearly ten years ago their lead singer Emmanuela Yogolelo fled the violence in her home country of the Democratic Republic of Congo and sought asylum in the UK. She didn't speak a word of English but she managed to forge a musical career. She also uses her talents to help other refugees through the organisation Musicians Without Borders. She recently took part in a concert they organised in which survivors of torture came together to make music. When I spoke to her from Salford in the northwest of England, Emmanuela told me how the war in the DRC affected her and her large extended family.
"It impacted on like my studies, my job, my future, everything, because you were no longer like free to plan for your future, to move around, to fulfil your dreams, your project. Sometimes you're not even able to go out of the house. Like twice my country was divided into two. I was living in the part occupied by rebels. We didn't have much like international connections. We didn't have like airports. It wasn't easy to travel, going out of the country. And everything was controlled by armies, by rebels. So that's how life was."
