The launch was condemned by the US and others who think North Korea's working to develop long-range missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads. Our correspondent Lucy Williamson sent this report from the South Korean capital Seoul.
Celebrations "North Korea Style" aren't spontaneous affairs. In Pyongyang's main square today, hundreds of thousands of people took their places, neat as chess pieces, standing stiffly in the cold. Over their heads, the vast banners bore slogans describing the people's fervent joy. But there was little celebration on the faces. Many of the soldiers looked drawn and cold.
The speeches talked of North Korea's scientific prowess and the vision of its great leaders, in particular its current one. Kim Jong Un has been in power less than a year. State media say he oversaw the launch process and gave the order one hour before. It's the second time Kim Jong Un has pressed ahead with the launch in the face of fierce international opposition. And he's promised there will be more to come, saying that North Korea is simply exercising its legitimate right to the peaceful use of space.本周早些时间，平壤数十万人参加了集会，纪念朝鲜卫星的成功发射。此次发射遭到了美国和其他国家的谴责，这些国家认为朝鲜试图研发可携带核弹头的远程导弹。我们的记者露西·威廉姆斯从韩国首都首尔发来报道。
