Hitchcock had been circling Hollywood for a number of years, tempted by the resources that only the big American studios could offer. He knew that a move to Hollywood meant giving up the autonomy he had won in England. In return, he was looking for money, security and prestige projects. In 1938, he signed a seven-year contract with producer David O. Selznick, and the following fateful year, 1939, the Hitchcocks left England for America.
