The Rolling Stones hit the road once more this weekend to mark 50 years since the band was formed and to make another packet. With Mick Jagger and Keith Richards about to turn 70 next year and with drummer Charlie Watts already turned, there's a talk this could be the Strolling Bones' final bow. This really could be the last time. But don't bet on it. The Stones get their satisfaction from making money. After a couple of small warm-up shows in Paris, the boys will play two nights at London's O2 Arena before heading to the US for three dates. The Stones operate like a major corporation with a complex financial operation which handles hundreds of millions of dollars. The BBC's Duncan Butler has been looking at the economics of the world's greatest rock band.
The last big Rolling Stones tour entitled "A Bigger Bang" sold 4.6 million tickets and earned $558 million. This year's outing to mark the band's 50th anniversary is modest by comparison, comprising of just five gigs so far. All the tickets sold out in minutes despite their high prices. For the London shows, tickets range from £90 to £375, that's about $150 to $550 and a hospitality package costs nearly £1,000 per head.
