Mankind has always been very keen on collecting data. What's a library if not a big data repository? So isn't big data just more of the same? The Business Daily editor decided I needed some re-education and sent me to a big data conference in a city famous for its ancient libraries - Oxford. That's where I met Michael Chui, one of the principals at the McKinsey Global Institute - the management consultant McKinsey & Company's research arm. I ask Michael what makes big data different from just, well, data.
"Well, we do think there are some new trends which are converging that allow companies and others to create value. So first of all, if you look over the past 25 years, data has moved from, that has generated, has moved from almost 100% analogue to 100% digital. And that's changed the ways in which you create value. The reason that data continues to explode exponentially are there are new sources of data. And what's interesting about some of that data is it's unstructured, unlike the data that fits nicely into rows and columns in databases. Things like audio and video and status updates, those things just don't fit nicely into our traditional forms of databases. And that means a lot of innovation has to occur."
