But she's declined to take a stand on the plight of the Muslim Rohingyas, tens of thousands of whom have been forced by elements in the majority Buddhist's community to flee their homes. Nearly 90 people were confirmed dead in the communal violence in Rakhine State. Aung San Suu Kyi said both sides had suffered and it wasn't her place to take sides. She made the comment in an interview with the BBC's Jonathan Head in the capital Naypyidaw.
"What is absolutely necessary now is rule of law. I understand that unrest is spreading, that communal violence is spreading and if we are to stop it, that people will have to feel secure. Until they feel secure they will not be prepared to sit down to talk about peace or understanding or mutual respect or any of those things."
