A new study from researches at Stanford University has suggested that being the CEO is actually less stressful than being a senior manager, because the CEO has more control over what happens to him or her. Well, it's a controversial argument, given many high-profile cases where top bosses have suffered severe stress. The most recent being the boss of Dutch chemicals company AkzoNobel, Ton Büchner, who took a leave of absence because of fatigue. Jeff Kindler of the drug company Pfizer resigned as CEO in 2010 saying that he needed to recharge his batteries. And there's Paul Huljich who used to be the joint chief executive of an organic food manufacturing business in New Zealand and Australia which employed 500 people. His experience led him to write a book "Stress Pandemic" - one man's guide on how to survive in the modern age. Paul's extreme stress, he told me, changed the course of his life.
"I actually thought around about the age of 40, I had the perfect life as a chairman, joint CEO of a multi-million-dollar pioneering organic food company. I had just built a grand mansion with everything you could believe a grand mansion would have, and of course, a Ferrari posh in the driveway. And I could travel the world. I was free as a bird.
