But there's another tricky negotiation, that of at least one of FDR's mistresses and his wife Eleanor. So is it a fresh take on several kinds of diplomacy or a case of shameless cashing-in on the success of The King's Speech? Roger Michell.
This film I feel we made in spite of The King's Speech and not because of the The King's Speech. I mean historically it's worth noting that we started work on this long before The King's Speech was written. It started as a radio play on Radio 3, which was broadcast in 2006 or something. So we've been ticking away on this for a very, very long time. Now of course, The King's Speech came rushing into our lives, and delightfully. And initially, it was very, very concerning, you know, we worried that it'd scupper our story. But in some ways, The King's Speech works for us, cause it's the prequel, if you like, to our story. It's the trailer for our story. And we decided when we were rewriting the film in the light of The King's Speech's success. We decided that all the characters in our film had seen The King's Speech. So we kind of cleared the decks of a lot of kind of back story and info that we no longer need to peddle to the audience. We also pulled out a lot of material about stuttering, because that's been done. So I'm hoping that the success of The King's Speech will work for us on balance, although, we will, you know, clearly get the odd snippy review saying that we are just cynical old hacks trying to make a buck on the back of another film.那是1939年，正是《国王的演讲》片尾处所描述的时间，第一位出访美国的英国君主来到位于纽约州北部的总统乡间别墅。但此处又是另一场复杂的谈判，在富兰克林•德兰诺•罗斯福总统的夫人埃莉诺和他的至少一位情妇之间展开。所以，这是对多种外交手段的全新拍摄，还是毫无廉耻地从《国王的演讲》的成功中大赚一笔？罗杰•米歇尔对此作出了这样的解释。
我觉得虽然已有《国王的演讲》，我们还是会拍，我们拍这部影片并不是因为《国王的演讲》。我的意思是，回顾历史，早在国王的演讲创作很久之前我们就开始着手于电影制作了。首先是在Radio 3广播频道作为广播剧播放，大约是2006年的事。所以说我们着手这件事好久了。当然，现在来看，国王的演讲一下子走进了我们的生活，且是以令人愉快的方式。但开始阶段还是很令人担忧的，我们担心它会泄露我们的故事。但从某些方式来看，国王的演讲是为我们服务的，因为它是我们故事的前奏和预告片。于是我们决定要基于《国王的演讲》的成功来改写电影，并保证全组演员都看过它。因此，从某些方面来说，我们扫清了很多背景故事和知识的障碍，这样我们就不用向观众大肆宣传。同时我们还调出了关于主角的很多材料，因为这些材料已经完成了。因此我希望，国王的演讲总体上会对我们起促进作用，尽管，你也了解，我们肯定会招来老一套的批评，说我们只是一群玩世不恭的老油条，企图靠另外一部电影来大赚一笔。
