Unrest over pay and conditions, together with inter-union rivalry, seems to be spreading. Police fired tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse strikers at a gold mine near Johannesburg today. The unrest occurred less than three weeks after police shot dead 34 striking miners at Lonmin's Marikana mine. Well the authorities have now begun releasing the first of 270 miners detained after those shootings and an official commission is now investigating conditions for mine workers. The country's Minister for Mineral Resources Susan Shabangu said that South Africa's miners are often separated from their families and face isolation in their living conditions.
"They used to build hostels to take care of those workers. It's the same principle which says, don't keep them alone, allow them to be part of the proto-communities. So there's no municipalities which decide and going to recruit workers. It's the mining companies themselves.
