Let's go back though in time to hear the context of the Queen's last Jubilee visit to Northern Ireland in 1977. Things then were very different as this snippet from a documentary made at the time by Peter Taylor shows.
That afternoon, 3,000 supporters of the Provisional IRA hailed Elizabeth as "Queen of Death" in a black flag march down the Falls Road.
"Well, we organised a march that to show that she had no support in the nationalist community and we were alerted in the city centre that the march was banned."
After the preliminary skirmish, battle proper commenced. The army snatch squad tries to outflank the rioters but is driven back. This is an ugly face of Ulster. This is the face the Queen did not see.
Two years later, the IRA murdered the Queen's cousin Lord Mountbatten when they blew up his boat.
