This five-year-old boy is one of six people in eastern Turkey with suspected bird flu. "I made him eat chicken, but the chicken was sick," says his mother.
January, 2006, and a health scare had arrived in Europe.

Six years ago, bird flu was making headlines. Deaths amongst Turkish children that year marked the first fatalities from avian influenza outside Asia. And though there were but a handful of deaths, new cases in Indonesia during the same outbreak sparked fears that the virus had somehow also acquired the ability to spread directly from person to person.
That turned out not to be the case. But in 2009 it was the turn of swine flu. Once again the virus had jumped from animals to humans, and while it proved far less lethal than expected, it spread like wildfire across the world. To virologists, this cycle of emergence of influenza viruses from animal reservoirs is like the enemy probing their defences in a prelude to war.
The scenario that keeps them awake at night is the outbreak of a new influenza virus that can kill efficiently and spread quickly from person to person.“土耳其发生人类感染禽流感病例。一个出现发病症状的男孩在医院去世了。”
