"I shall resign the Presidency effective at noon tomorrow."
Mr. Nixon's resignation shocked the public. Fall out from a scandal known as Watergate. The Watergate Complex housed the opposition Democratic Party Headquarters where police discovered five burglars 40 years ago. That discovery hinged on this door, now on display at the Newseum in Washington. Kerry Stopherson is the Newseum's curator.
"A door from the Watergate building that was taped open and discovered by a security guard that's precipitating what winds up being the Watergate we know today, which is not just a hotel but the scandal that brings down a president."
Two Washington Post reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein investigated the break-in and uncovered ties to Mr. Nixon's White House.
