21 years after she won it while living under house arrest in Burma, the pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi has finally accepted her Nobel Peace Prize in person. The Nobel Committee's current Chairman Thorbjoern Jagland said they'd been right to give her the award back in 1991.
"The 21-year interim has proved the committee right about this. Your voice became increasingly clear, the more the military regime tried to isolate you. Your cause mobilised your people and prevailed over a massive military junta. And whenever your name is mentioned or when you speak today, your words bring energy and hope to the entire world. You are a precious gift to the world community."
And Ms Suu Kyi herself said that the award had come at a time of intense isolation and had restored her sense of connection to the world, both for herself and for the democratic aspirations of the Burmese people.
"Often, during my days of house arrest, it felt as though I were no longer a part of the real world. There was a house which was my world and there was the world of the free. What the Nobel Peace Prize did was to draw me once again into the world of other human beings outside the isolated area in which I lived, to restore a sense of reality to me."我们接下来看到挪威首都奥斯陆。

“在我被软禁的日子里，我经常感觉自己好像脱离了现实世界。软禁我的房子是我的世界，外面则是另一个自由世界。诺贝尔和平奖带我脱离了那个与世隔离的空间，再一次走进了其他人类生活的世界，让我恢复了真实的感觉。”
