Shares in Madrid ended Monday lower and the country's cost of borrowing rose. On Wall Street, Spain was the only story in town, as I heard from Wayne Kaufmann at John Thomas Financial in New York.
"The news regarding Spain's bailout was initially met with enthusiasm. But then people really started thinking about it and they don't believe it really solves the problems. So Spanish bonds sold off very quickly. And now Italy is in the forefront. Italian bond yields hit the highest level since January. And people are worried about Italy. In the eurozone, only Greece has more debt as a share of its economy than Italy has. So to sum it up, people are worried that Italy is the next Spain and Spain is the next Greece."
So the view from Wall Street is that what we saw over the weekend from Spain in terms of a bailout for Spanish banks has almost done the opposite in allaying fears about the eurozone's future.
"Yeah, it's been viewed as just another kicking-the-can-down-the-road kind of situation.
