In the first week, there's been unusually heavy rain on the Côte d'Azur making, from all dynamic, people drifting like sodden spectres between the screenings in the vast Lumiere Theatre interrupted by brief moments of frenzy dynamation as another constituency - the celebrity news pack - cluster along the designated route of Brad or Quentin. Lenses, phone cameras and tablet screens held aloft from enhanced second long glimpse. For the competition jury members, controversies about lack of female directors soon gave way to the business of watching the films.
Here's one of the juries, Alexander Payne, director of Sideways and The Descendants in the relative calm of the Palm Bar.
"I'm a four or five film per day kind of guy when I go to festivals. So this is - this is easy. I'm not much of a partygoer at the rest of the festival coz I need to be quite awake during the day to be fair to the film makers and to the festival.
