In Spain, the government called for calm after steep share price falls in one of the nation's largest banks. Well, after the last financial crisis, politicians promised regulation that would make banks safer and stop them taking dangerous risks. Has it worked? Fast forward to today and we have the scandal of 2.3-billion-dollar trading losses at the Wall Street giant JP Morgan Chase. The bank is under investigation by various authorities after one of its divisions made the huge losses from buying derivatives. The chief executive of JP Morgan Jamie Dimon has publicly apologised.
"In hindsight, we took far too much risk. The strategy we had was badly vetted. It was badly monitored. It should've never happened. I do want to put in perspective, the company is gonna earn a lot of money this quarter. And so it's a very strong company. We made a terrible, egregious mistake. There's almost no excuse for it."
Some investors in JP Morgan are angry that Mr Dimon didn't address their concerns on Wall Street. A shareholders' meeting this week was held in Tampa, Florida. One such shareholder is Alan Fisher of the California Reinvestment Coalition.
"This is the one time we shareholders get to be face to face with the chairman and CEO and say 'here are our concerns.' And for them to run away from New York was very disappointing and sort of changed my thinking about him as kind of a bold person."
