Vechosyhttp://t1.g.hjfile.cn/listen/201205/201205190337372939980.mp3And this week, we'll be looking at perhaps the most important and most underrated group of organisms on the planet. We'll hear from Rwanda, where they are being used to fight malnutrition, and we'll hear from New York too, where they are being turned into packaging.
"I thought these guys were crazy, and then we were crazy to listen to them. But as we dug into it, it really seemed to make a lot of sense."
We create drugs with them. We make food and drink with them. We eat them, cooked and raw, and yet they are linked in our minds with rot and decay.
"Well, it might be off-putting to you, but is not off-putting to me. Decay really is essential for life."
We'll start in Rwanda, a densely crowded nation with an economy based on subsistence agriculture. The land is fertile, but food production can't keep pace with population growth. So the government has launched a campaign to persuade people to grow mushrooms, packed with protein, vitamins, and essential minerals too. Here's Prudent Nsengiyumva.
"I'm at the Rwanda Agricultural Technology Demonstration Centre, near the southern city of Huye. It's the home of a new industry for Rwanda, the mushroom industry. Giant machines fill the warehouse, mixing the grass powder, lime, urine and water to produce mushroom substrates in what they call 'tubes' packed in plastic bags. It's a nasty smell, like rain on the dust."
