He said this desire was unshakable and absolutely no one at Monday's meeting of finance ministers had discussed Athens leaving the euro. Mr Juncker said he looked forward to the swift formation of a new Greek government. But he also said the eurozone expects the government to continue to implement unpopular austerity policies made by the previous administration.
"This is not a time to relax the reform effort. On the contrary, continued fiscal and structural reforms are Greece's best guarantee for a more prosperous future in euro area. We therefore encourage Greece to resolutely continue to adjust the structural weakness of its economy."
In Athens talks in forming an emergency coalition government in Greece have ended for the day with no sign of progress. The negotiations will resume on Tuesday. One proposal the leaders of the main parties discussed was the formation of another technocratic government, made up of distinguished nonpolitical figures.
