World markets have headed south. British bookmakers have stopped taking bets on whether Greece will soon be forced out of the single European currency. The basic problem of course is that Greece depends on international loans to avoid defaulting on its multibillion-dollar debts, loans that are coming partly from Brussels which is demanding more cuts and partly from the International Monetary Fund. The fund has dumped out about a quarter of 170-billion-dollar Greek bailout provided so far. But while European leaders continue to talk tough, how does the IMF regard the Greek dilemma? Is there room for manoeuvre in the great debate between requiring further cuts to this struggling economy, or is there room to spend more to provide stimulus? I ask the former IMF chief economist Simon Johnson.
"There's always wiggle room. You can always adjust the terms of a programme if you're willing to provide more funding, more financing. And of course you have to be convinced that there's light at the end of the tunnel. Depending on the political pressures, you can become more or less convinced of that. But unfortunately, given where the Greeks are today, where they've come from and the way the elections are played out, I think that hope is being abandoned, as we speak. And I think they will be shortly going their own way."
