Ahead of him over the next few years were roles in Billy Liar for director John Schlesinger, King & Country for Joseph Losey, Doctor Zhivago for David Lean, and the first of two Oscar nominations, the second being in 1984 for The Dresser written by Ronald Harwood who's also written the next film. Sir Tom, he was knighted in 2001, would be seen in. That's Quartet which is the directing debut of one Dustin Hoffman. But to return to 1962 and The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner, it was an acclaimed short story by Alan Sillitoe who adapted it for the screen. And with this particular film, director Tony Richardson took the monochrome realism of early British New Wave with its industrial settings and kitchen sinks out into the open.
