First, residents of the Big Apple tried out rooftop vegetable growing, then backyard bee keeping. Now the newest craze is high-rise fish rearing or Aquaponics and it's taken off in the deprived area of South Bronx. Our New York reporter Matt Wells went along to find out more.
"To resex them, we begin to put them into our larger tanks, anything from 50-gallon recycling bins or another food grade barrel. "

Christopher Tu shows off some of the Tilapia fish which he hopes will change New York's food system. The financial crash has made it all the more important to find cheaper, better, more nutritious staples, he says.
"I was a banker. Before that I was a stockbroker, financial advisor. I even worked for Mercedes-Benz for a while and I sold Porsches, all kinds of things. "
"So you've done your fair share of conventional capitalism?" "That's it. I'm well-trained profiteer, and well versed in all the angles of the parasite economy. I think when you talk about growing fish, you're forgetting, I mean, our Mayor said that all the schools are gonna have little market gardens or little kitchen gardens. And that's been happening, why not add fish? I mean the ground has been ploughed for us; we are not the pioneers here.
