More than 1,600 Belgian Jews are being herded onto a huge train. It's the 20th convoy to leave the Dossin Barracks for Auschwitz. But for 11-year-old Simon Granovsky and his mother, the journey seems to offer a slim chance to get away from their German guards.
"It was a chance for freedom by jumping out of the train. In our room, I had trained myself to jump from the highest bunk. But now, I was on the train, and I was crammed into this small carriage with 50 of us."
Each of the train's 30 cattle wagons have heavy sliding doors locked from the outside and secured with barbed wire. Inside, there is no food, water or light, and the only air comes from a small window in the top corner.
"Soon after the train left, a man who was young and slim jumped off the train through the small window. He hoisted himself up, and he slid feet first into the narrow opening. And then in a flash, he disappeared. My first thought was a perverse reflex of a child that it was not right and that he had behaved badly towards the Germans and broken a rule. “火车开动后不久，一个瘦瘦的年轻人就从那扇小窗跳下了火车。他先把自己吊高，接着先把双脚探出窄小的窗口，然后一转眼的功夫他就不见了。我脑中闪过的第一个念头尽管荒谬，却是一个孩子的条件反射，那就是这是不对的，他对德国人干了坏事，坏了规矩。但片刻之后，我却羡慕起他来了。”
