Bad weather has been hampering efforts to stop a major gas leak on a production rig in the North Sea of Scotland. The energy company Total is reported to be spending $1 million a day to try to get control of the leak, and losing $1.5 million a day as the methane, a potent greenhouse gas escapes to the episphere - about 200,000 cubic metres of it every single day.
And some shocking news from the Earth Institute at Columbia University in New York. If you're rich, safe, healthy, free, have good friends and family to support you, you are likely to be happier than if you're poor, at risk, oppressed, sick and lonely. These findings come in the first-ever World Happiness Report, commissioned by the United Nations, and Professor John Helliwell is one of the authors.
"In order to do development intelligently, you have to have some notion of what life is about. In the past people have treated economic variables, because they were measured and relatively easily available, as though they were in fact the goal of development. But of course in life, in any group of countries or in any household, every one knows it's about much more than that."
